Community Supported Agriculture

What is a CSA?
In our farm world, a commonly asked question with sometimes a long answer.

Short answer: an easy way to bring fresh food to the community around us.

Long answer: Community supported agriculture provides multiple benefits for both the farmer and the consumer. First of all, being a part of a CSA provides a connection between the farmer and the buyer throughout the growing season. As a consumer, you get to experience the ups and downs of the farming season, including both the bumper crops and the crops that don’t make it. Second, it helps the farmer (us) kick start the growing season with capital and guaranteed buyers.

A “farm share”, as we call it, includes a variety of vegetables, herbs, and sometimes fruits from around our farm. Early on in the season, we harvest some root vegetables like radishes as well as snow peas, salad greens and early herbs. At the height of the summer, green beans, many varieties of tomatoes, zucchini, and peppers start rolling in, along with some fruits. As the summer wanes, we harvest the larger winter squash, apples, eggplant, and the second planting of salad greens and root veggies.
Each year, I try to plant something new or different. My favorite “unusual” veggie is the purple striped green bean, but we’ve also grown purple tomatoes, miniature peppers, and other oddities.
